Description of Wiki
The phenomena of Wiki allow everyday Internet users to freely create and edit web content. The open editing concept has grown since the early 90’s, with popular websites like Wikipedia. People began sharing information in a bilateral fashion, a form of multi-directional communication on relevant information.
Historical Precedents of Wiki
Before the Wiki was released, there was the World Wide Web, the Encyclopedia, and the email. These three precedents share similar characteristics with communication and information sharing. They are all open source applications, but all have a more unilateral approach, which is a one directional form of communication. Together they paved the way for Wiki’s to become a popular multi-directional form of communication.
The World Wide Web is a hypertext client that allows the creation of websites in text format on the Internet. With this new technology, people were starting to share information online. Individuals would create web pages with information for others to look at, which reinforced the unilateral approach.
The Encyclopedia is a work of reference, a holding bank of information on particular branched of knowledge, or general knowledge of many branches. Encyclopedia entries are much more detailed then ordinary dictionaries, and they can grow to be extremely large. Original encyclopedias are organized by Alphabet; often each letter has its own volume. Volumes of encyclopedias can fill libraries. Even though encyclopedias fill the World Wide Web now as well, they still remain a unilateral form of communication.
The email is a relevant precedent to Wiki because it is a collaborative tool like Wiki. It was a digital online method to send information to a one recipient or more. People would send information to each other so they would not have to meet to exchange knowledge. It was the closest thing to instant communication, and keeping in touch, in comparison to face-to-face communication. Before wikis emerged, emails were used for personal, social, and work related information. Even though emails are so close to instant communication, they are still a form of unilateral communication, because one email must be sent first, before another email can be replied.
Currents Perspectives of Wiki
Now, year 2011, the most popular Wikis are Wikipedia, and Wiki leaks. At first Wikipedia was revolutionary in bilateral information sharing. Then Wiki leaks showed up, and created controversial open source information for everyone, by sharing private, or classified information from anonymous sources. The wiki offers confidential government information to the general public. The creator of Wiki leaks is also under very much scrutiny. Julian Assange has many federal offense charges against him, and is sometime considered a hero, or a dangerous troublemaker. As the creator of Wiki leaks, I would probably say he is a troublemaker who likes to stir things up. He may be causing trouble, but he is doing well by exposing oppressive regimes across the globe.
Conclusion
I think wiki’s will continue to release controversial information for the general public. The world is in a dark state, with global pollution, political unrest, and economical issues. The general public wants to see positive changes, at the same time; they want to unravel wrongdoings that have sent our world into this state of depression. With these needs, Wiki leaks will continue to prevail, and other social media applications will be released to provide information on leadership regiments, and political controversies.
